HALI ACHED ALL OVER AFTER HER PHYSICAL THERAPY. She didn’t want to admit it, though. Especially to Helene, who she was determined to keep close even as she wondered if she was being an idiot for trusting the woman a second time.

“Let’s go to the tiki bar,” Hali said when they were in the parking lot in front of the villa. Helene had obviously driven, and in her luxury Cadillac, but the beachcomber made for an enticing distraction.

“Hmm?” Helene dragged her eyes to the cart. “Um … aren’t you supposed to be taking it easy? That physical therapy was two hours of grueling grunting. I heard your therapist. He said you’re supposed to be quiet for the rest of the day.”

The physical therapy had been grueling. There was no getting around that. Hali refused to let herself feel weak, though. “I have tomorrow off from PT,” she reminded Helene.

“Not because you’re better,” Helene argued. “I heard him talking. He said you would be too sore, and you need to let your muscles heal. Then, the day after tomorrow you’re back at it again.”

“Yes, and I’m not looking forward to that,” Hali conceded. “If I’m going to be in as much pain tomorrow as he suggests, though, I want to go to the bar today.”

It was clear Helene was going to argue, so Hali fervently started shaking her head. “I’m going to the tiki bar whether you like it or not. There’s no stopping me.”

Helene stared at Hali for several seconds, then nodded. “Fine. When Gray complains, though, I want you to tell him this was your idea. He’s going to blame me.”

“I’ll handle Gray.”

Helene’s lips turned up. “You do handle him better than anybody I’ve ever met.”

“I don’t handle him. I just understand him.”

“You’re good with him.” Helene momentarily looked sad. “You’re very good with him in fact. He was a sullen child. He never smiled. I thought it was because of the pack stuff. Now I have to wonder if it was me as a mother.”

“Don’t beat yourself up over things you can’t change,” Hali instructed. “Worry about things you can change. That includes your current relationship with Gray. That’s the stuff that you need to be thinking about. We all need to move forward. You can’t change the past.”

“I’m working on it,” Helene said. “I just … don’t know how to be a better parent. It feels as if it’s too late to change.”

“It’s not too late,” Hali countered. “It’s not even remotely too late. You can be the mother he deserves. More importantly, one day, you can be the grandmother our children deserve.”

Helene made a face. “They can’t call me ‘grandma.’ You know that, right? I’m too young to be a grandmother.”

“Yeah, they’re going to call you ‘grandma.’” Hali couldn’t contain her smile. “Actually, I think ‘granny’ is even better. We’ll think of that as your penance.”

“It’s too much.”

“Something tells me you’ll live.”
